New Delhi, Sep 7 (IBNS): Nirmala Sitharaman took charge on Thursday as the first full time woman Defence Minister of the country .

Sitharaman succeeded Arun Jaitley who had an additional charge of the Defence Ministry along with the finance.

After taking the charge of her office, Sitharaman said that defence and defence related issues will be taken care of.

Sitharaman is the first full time and second woman to hold the portfolio of Defence.

Indira Gandhi was the first woman to become Defence Minister of India but she had an additional charge of the office.

Following the cabinet re-shuffle in the Modi government, Sitharaman took oath of her office on Sunday along with eight others.

With Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the Modi government is now having two women in its cabinet.

Sitharaman, the former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson, earlier served the central government as the Commerce and Industry Minister.
