M Venkaiah Naidu elected as India's new Vice President

New Delhi, Aug 5 (IBNS): M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday was elected as the new Vice President of India, beating his rival Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

After being elected as the Vice President, Naidu said he promised to uphold the Constitution and the high standards.

Thanking all lawmakers, who supported him, Naidu said: "With all humility, I express my gratitude to every MP who supported my candidature cutting across party lines."

He tweeted : "I promise to uphold the Constitution and the high standards set by my esteemed predecessors."

Naidu said he was honoured to become the Vice President of the nation.

"It's an honour for me to become Vice President from a family of an ordinary farmer.This Speaks for the beauty & strength of our democracy," Naidu tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to congratulate Venkaiah Naidu.

Naidu became the 15th Vice President of the country.

Congratulating Naidu, PM Modi tweeted: "Congratulations to @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu on being elected India’s Vice President. My best wishes for a fruitful & motivating tenure."

Naidu secured 516 votes out of the total 760 valid votes polled.

In a follow tweet, the PM said: "I am confident @MVenkaiahNaidu will serve the nation as a diligent & dedicated Vice President, committed to the the goal of nation building."

Opposition's candidate Gopal Krishna Gandhi got 244 votes.

The returning officer briefed the media that 771 votes were polled in the VP poll out of which 11 were invalid.

While Naidu was backed by NDA, former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi was the Opposition's candidate.

Gandhi also congratulated the winning candidate.

Congress spokesperson Ghulam Navi Azad said: "It was an ideological fight. We never compromise with our ideology."

Gandhi, was nominated by the 18 opposition parties as their candidate for the V-P poll.

BJP veteran Naidu was the former Information and Broadcasting minister of the Modi government and also held various other portfolios.
