GTA does not work, Mamata says in North Bengal

Mirik, Mar 30 (IBNS): With few months to go for the Municipal elections in four districts of North Bengal, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attacked Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) for not doing any work since its formation, according to media reports on Thursday.

"Neither GTA works nor it allows us (WB government) to work," she said.

GTA was formed in 2011 by TMC government in West Bengal by passing a bill in the Legislative Assembly that empowered the body to have administrative, executive and financial powers in the hill stations which includes Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Speaking about the reluctance of GTA to work in the hills, Mamata said: "We formed GTA in 2011 and provided all assistance to them from government's side, even to all municipalities. But I am really saddened to say that they did not work at all."

The election in four municipalities like Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik will be held in this year.

WB CM announced the formation of Mirik sub-division on Thursday.

Congratulating Mirik, Banerjee in a Facebook post said: "Like the rest of the hills and the plains, we are committed towards total development of Mirik."

Banerjee is currently in North Bengal to host several administrative meetings.
