Sonowal directs Assam Police to provide security cover to singer Nahid Afrin

Guwahati, Mar 15 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the issuing of Fatwa allegedly by mullahs in Assam against upcoming singer Nahid Afrin and termed it as despicable.

He said that such a move cannot be tolerated in a civilised society.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sonowal said that such a ruling against practising art and culture is unacceptable and is tantamount to infringement of one’s freedom of cultural rights.

In the light of the alleged fatwa, Chief Minister Sonowal directed the Assam Police to provide security cover to Nahid Afrin.

Sonowal had a telephonic conversation with Nahid Afrin and assured her of all steps to ensure her security so that she can continue pursuing her vocations fearlessly and bring laurels to the State.

Sonowal also said that the State Government is committed to providing security to all artistes in Assam and maintain an environment conducive to pursue art and culture.

“Government would not tolerate any move to bog down any artiste of the State," said he.

He also said that a section of vicious force is hell bound to disturb the age old bonhomie of Assam.

"State’s amity and integrity would be upheld at any cost so that people belonging to Barak, Brahmaputra, hills and plains can live peacefully depicting the ethos of unity in diversities,” Sonowal said.

Sonowal also said that the government has accorded top priority to the security of all artistes including Nahid Afrin.

Any perturbed attempt to intimidate the artistes of the State would not be tolerated, Sonowal retorted.
