Sonowal, Nadda launch construction of Dhubri Medical College

Guwahati, Feb 17 (IBNS): Adding yet another feather to the Assam government's bid to provide accessible, affordable and accountable healthcare delivery system, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and State Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the construction work of Dhubri Medical College and Hospital at Dhubri on Friday.

The college to be built with a budgetary outlay of Rs. 189 Cr. on sprawling 108 bigha of land will be completed within 3 years.

The proposed medical college will be attached with the existing 200 bedded District and Referral Hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal termed the day as a red letter day for a historic district like Dhubri and hailed the people of the district for peacefully co-existing since decades.

Addressing the gathering Sonowal said that the government is committed to bring about overall development of Dhubri.

He also said that the Government has shortlisted agenda of priorities for Dhubri and as such sectors like communication, education, transportation and other social sectors will be put on development track.

Sonowal also said that the present govt. is working resolutely to serve all 3.20 cr. people of the state living in Barak, Brahmaputra, Hills and plains.

Stating Assam has all possibilities to glitter as the most developed state of the nation, he said, ‘the only thing we have to adhere is living with all in peace and harmony’.

Reiterating that the government is all for giving a fillip to ‘sabka sath sabka vikash’, Sonowal said that the one point agenda of the government is to facilitate development of all sections of the people and urged the people to be united and strengthen the demographic mosaic of the state.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda while speaking on the occasion said that the centre has accorded top priority to development of healthcare in Assam and accordingly Rs 756 crore has been sanctioned for four new medical colleges in Assam.

He also said that the centre has drafted National List of Essentials Medicines under which government to fix rates of essentials drugs which will be made available in AMRIT pharmacy and five such pharmacies have been opened in five medical college hospitals in Assam.

He also said that 500 types of medicines, 85 types of tests will be made free of cost at 16 District Hospitals in Assam and subsequently these facilities will be made available in community health centres and primary health centres.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma speaking on the occasion said that for setting of Dhubir Medical College Hospital, the 60 bigha of land that have been acquisition, compensation to those people will be given by March 31, 2017.

He also said that construction works will be taken up on war footing and entire construction work will be completed within three years.

Moreover, medical colleges will be setup in Nagaon, Lakhimpur and Diphu Medical College & Hospital will be made functional within this financial year.

Referring to Atal Amrit Abhiyan, Sarma said that to extend helping hands to the people below poverty line suffering from dreaded disease, government will provide Rs 2 lakh each patient for treatment.

He also said that a committee consisting of Senior Citizens will be constituted to supervise the construction work of the college. Moreover, he asked the Commissioner and  Secretary, Health to visit Dhubri and assess progress of the construction work regularly.

Several MLAs, senior government officers and a host of dignitaries were present on the occasion.
