Sri Lankan Navy arrest Indian fishermen alleging breach of territorial waters

Chennai/Colombo, Feb 2 (IBNS): Sri Lankan Navy arrested five Indian fishermen and impounded their boats alleging they were fishing in their territorial waters, according to media reports on Thursday.

The incident occurred last night when five fishermen from Jegadapattinam in Pudukottai district were fishing near Neduntheevu and were rounded up by the Lankan Navy and taken to Jaffna in the island nation, reported The Financial Express quoting Pudukottai district fisheries department,Assistant Director Sekar.

With this, total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 25. Total of 137 fishing boats are also in Sri Lankan custody, the media reported.

On January 8, the Sri Lankan Navy had arrested 10 fishermen from Ramanathapuram and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu and impounded their boats on similar charges.
