1984 riots: Sonia refuses to submit passport copy

India Blooms News Service (IBNS) | | 08 Apr 2014, 09:55 am
New York, Apr 8 (IBNS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi has refused to submit a copy of her passport in a US court in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, said reports on Tuesday.

According to reports, in a letter, she told a Brooklyn court that the Indian government will not permit her to do so for security reasons.

In September last year, US-based human rights group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson was served summons at a hospital in the US in connection with the case.

SFJ leaders confirmed that the summons was delivered to Gandhi when she was at the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York for a medical check-up.

A US federal court issued summons against Gandhi for allegedly protecting party leaders who were accused of being involved in the anti-Sikhriots that rocked India in 1984.

SFJ, along with victims of the riots, filed the class action suit against Gandhi.

They sought compensatory and punitive damages against Gandhi, reports said.

The riots erupted in Delhi and elsewhere following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.
