Army, Air Force in rescue and relief operations in Chennai
Reports said more choppers and boats will be used in rescue operations. Even though there was no rain on Tuesday, the accumulated water continued to submerge vast areas throwing life out of gear.
Indian Air Force personnel evacuated 22 people, including 12 children, from the flood-hit areas and airdropped food packets and water for the affected people.
Two Cheetahs choppers were used in rescue operation on Monday. Two Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs) and two Mi-17 V5s are also on standby.
Boats are also being used in many flooded areas to rescue stranded people. National Disaster Response Force teams have also been asked to help.
People are also being evacuated from Kotturpuram, where release of water from the Sembarambakkam reservoir may cause sudden flooding.
Chennai has received a maximum of 4cm rain since on Monday night. The Met department has predicted the city would receive mild showerson Tuesday.
Met office said a depression over the Bay of Bengal that led to heavy downpour here over the last three days has moved Kavali in Andhra Pradesh.
Altogether 71 people have died in rain-related incidents since November nine.
