Assam remembers music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 4th death anniversary
Guwahati, Nov 5 (IBNS): Assam on Thursday remembered music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 4th death anniversary across the state.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday inaugurated the Samadhisthal of Asom Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and dedicated it to the people of Assam.
Inaugurating the Samadhisthal (Memorial) of the music maestro coinciding with his 4th death anniversary at Jalukbari, Gogoi said that Dr. Hazarika was an institution by himself and endeared all by his unbounded love for humanity.
“Dr. Hazarika lives in the hearts and minds of the people. His songs mirror the hopes and aspirations, trials and tribulations, narrate tales of injustice, subjugation and oppression, flora and fauna which in essence celebrates the various facets of life in its entirety,” Gogoi said, adding that the maestro’s creations would continue to live so long the mighty Brahmaputra flows.
Gogoi said that Dr. Hazarika was a revolutionary leader who wanted to bring an end to all sorts of oppression and subjugation and build a just society order wherein all communities could flourish and live in peaceful co-existence.

The Assam CM said that the maestro transcended the barriers of caste, creed or religion and tried to bind together every community.
Gogoi said that the doyen of culture represented the cultural ethos of different communities in his creations and enriched Assamese culture.
“We would like to take Dr. Hazarika’s priceless creations beyond the shores of India and make known to the whole world how rich Assamese culture is,” the Assam CM said.
“Dr. Hazarika’s greatness by the people in recent times augurs well for the State. Today more and more people are realizing his greatness and coming out in the open to take his legacy forward. And that augurs well for the State,” Gogoi said.
The Assam CM said that Dr. Hazarika was known as singer of the masses and his greatness lies in the fact that the young and old alike affectionately called him ‘Bhupen da’ (brother).
“Greatness of the maestro lies in the fact that everyone called him Bhupen da simply because they considered him to be their own,” Gogoi said.
Lauding the efforts of Cultural Affairs Department, PWD (Buildings) and other stake holders in building the Samadhisthal, Gogoi said that the Government would make continued efforts to spruce up the memorial in the days ahead.
Gogoi while disclosing the decision to constitute Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Society and announced Rs 10 crore for the purpose.
The Assam CM said that he would write to Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal for a suitable place for erection of a statue of the maestro, besides taking steps for similar initiatives in Kolkata and in Columbia (USA) where the maestro did his Ph.D.
Assam Cultural Affairs minister Bismita Gogoi said that a long-cherished dream of the people has been fulfilled with the inauguration of the Samadhisthal.
Minister for PWD, Ajanta Neog said the Samadhisthal would help to keep alive the ideals of the doyen of culture and inspire and motivate generations to come.
Addressing the huge gathering, renowned singer, Sudakshina Sarma praised the State Government for perpetuating the hallowed memory of Dr. Hazarika for posterity and suggested that a museum be built not only to preserve the maestro’s creations but also that showcases a ‘Mini Assam’.
“May the Samadhisthal become a meeting point of various races and tribes and bring about peace and harmony in society,” sister of Dr Bhupen Hazarika said.
Earlier, the Assam CM unveiled the life-size statue of the maestro and paid eloquent tribute at his memorial accompanied by his wife Dolly Gogoi and ministerial colleagues.
Gogoi felicitated architect Gautam Baruah and sculptor Dilip Sarma on the occasion.
The Assam CM released a VCD on Dr. Hazarika’s songs brought out by Dipu Bora, a CD by Surya Hazarika and a booklet by Cultural Affairs Department.
On other hand, All Assam Students Union (AASU) and many organizations, civil societies of the state had remembered the musical maestro.
