Five tea labourers died of starvation in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 14 (IBNS): At least five tea garden labourers died of starvation in Assam's Cachar district in the past week.

The incident took place at Bhuban Valley tea estate under Lakhipur sub division in the Barak Valley district, where more than 600 labourer families had faced food crisis in past a month.

“At least five labourers of the tea estate were died of starvation so far and more than 50 people fell ill,” Radheshyam Bauri, a labourer of the tea estate said.

In 2012, at least 12 labourers of the tea estate had died of starvation.

“We have faced food crisis in the past month, after the manager of the tea estate fled. The ration supply and other facilities including medical are totally stopped,” Radheshyam said.

The deceased persons were identified as Gauri Paul (57 years), Lakhi Sabar (26 years), Mini Bauri (26 years), Kaushalya Bauri (55 years) and a child.

At least six labourers were admitted in Silchar Medical College hospital after they fell ill.
