Security Council reforms must for greater credibility : PM Modi tells UN

New York, Sept 26 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for bringing in reforms in the United Nations Security Council to make it more credible.

"We must reform the United Nations including its Security Council so that it carries greater credibility and legitimacy," he said in his address to the United Nations General Assembly.

Modi's 18-minute speech in Hindi was interspersed with Sanskrit shlokas.

His call comes at a time when India makes a strong bid for a permanent seat in an expanded Security Council.

He also  made a strong pitch for eradication of poverty, describing how India has launched initiatives for financial inclusion and empowerment.

"We are all dreaming of a world that is free from poverty".

"Since we attained freedom, we have focussed on ending poverty. Education and skill development are priorities for us," he said.

He said India is giving attention to the 'personal sector'.

"World talks of public and private sector. We are looking at the personal sector. This means individual enterprise, innovation," Modi said.

He said the Security Council and the United Nations should be reformed in order to maintain its credibility.

"We see the entire world as one family," he said
