New Delhi, May 16 (IBNS): With the BJP-led NDA registering a thumping victory in the Lok Sabha polls under the leadership of Narendra Modi, thrashing the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) that has ruled the country for the past ten years, world leaders congratulated the BJP strongman for his performance in the ballot box in the world's largest democracy on Friday.

UK Government congratulates India’s Prime Minister-elect, Narendra Modi, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on their election success.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "I congratulate Narendra Modi and the BJP on their success and look forward to forging an even closer partnership with India in the months ahead."

"With 815 million eligible voters, 915,000 polling stations, and nine days of voting over five weeks, India has seen the largest parliamentary election in the world," he said.

"The UK has strong ties with India and the British Government looks forward to working with the new Indian Government to build on this relationship and deliver security, growth and prosperity for both our nations," he said.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa  also extended his congratulations to Modi and invited him for a state visit to Sri Lanka.

"President Rajapaksa congratulated Mr Modi and said that the economic progress could be achieved only through a stable government and he was glad that Mr Modi would be able to form a stable government as his party’s resounding victory. He extended Mr Modi an invitation to pay a state visit to Sri Lanka at his earliest convenience," said an official statement.

Pakistan prime Minister Nawaz Sharif congratulated Modi over his victory.

"The Prime Minister spoke to BJP leader Narendra Modi this afternoon and congratulated him over the party’s impressive victory in the just concluded general elections in India," Geo News reported quoting a statement.

Bangladesh prime minister has greeted Modi over the landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

“I am delighted to see a great friend of Bangladesh leading an extremely friendly country, India, in the coming days,” Hasina said in a letter to Modi  as was quoted by The Daily Star.

"I hope that you would find my country your second home and first destination for your official visit abroad," she said.

Hasina said: 'The decisive verdict given by the people of your great country is a strong testimony to your dynamic, inspiring and visionary leadership qualities and manifestation of the trust and confidence reposed in you by the people of the largest democracy in the world.”
