Over 200 killed in Turkey mine accident

India Blooms News Service | | 14 May 2014, 12:42 pm
Istanbul, May 14 (IBNS): More than 200 miners were killed in a blast and resultant fire at a Turkish mine on Tuesday with the government saying the toll could go up to 300 in one of the worst mine disasters of the world.

According to Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yidiz, hundreds were trapped inside the mine in the western province of Manisa's Soma district since May 13 even as rescue teams tried their best to save people.

The incident occurred after a fire from an explosion in a power distribution unit,  Yıldız said, adding in a statement that the death toll could rise as over 300 hundred workers could still be trapped inside.

"We have lost 201 of our worker brothers. We fear that the number will rise," Yıldız said.

Soon after the incident people's anger rose in the country as many said the safety measures were not enough and the government had ignored warnings earlier.
