I-T returns: Jayalalithaa skips court

India Blooms News Service | | 03 Apr 2014, 12:17 pm
Chennai, Apr 3 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday skipped appearing in a Chennai court in connection with an income tax case.

Instead, she filed a petition seeking exemption from personal appearance in the case.

On Mar 20, the court directed Jayalalithaa and her close aide Sasikala Natarajan to appear before it on Apr 3 in connection with the case.

In January, the Supreme Court had said Jayalalithaa will face trial in a lower court for not filing Income Tax (I-T) returns between 1991 and 1994.

However, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) supremo said she did not file the I-T returns as she had no income to show in those three years.

The I-T department had filed the case against her in the apex court.

The Supreme Court ordered the lower court to finish Jayalalithaa's trial within four months.
