New York, Aug 4 (IBNS): In an apparent racial attack, a 29-year-old Sikh man was allegedly hit by a pickup truck in New York. He was admitted to a hospital in a critical condition, media reports said.

The man, identified as Sandeep Singh, who is a father of two, was reportedly hit after a racial attack by the driver of the offending vehicle.

According to reports, the incident took place when Sandeep and his friend were standing on the street after having dinner at a restaurant when the truck came close to them.   The incident occurred on Wednesday near the victim's office on 99th Street in Ozone Park.

The driver threw a racial slur on the duo following which angered Sandeep tried to stopp the vehicle by standing in front of it. He was dragged nearly 30 feet as the driver did not stop the truck in an attempt to run him over, reports said.

According to ABC news, Baldey Singh , who was with Sandeep when he was hit by the truck, the two men were wrapping up their evening, had just finished dinner and were saying goodbye when it happened.

Baldey said the driver had yelled a racial slur at him and his friends leading to a brawl and later when they tried to call police by intercepting the truck, "the  driver hit the gas, and ran right over Sandeep."

"Sandeep was dragged roughly 30 feet down 101st Avenue. His body finally came loose from the truck, which kept on going," Baldev told Eye Witness News on ABC.

Rights group ‘Sikh Coalition’ has already demanded a hate crime investigation into the racial attack incident.

"A Sikh man was seriously injured as a driver ran him over in Queens. We have asked for a hate crime investigation," it tweeted.
