Maya slams Modi over 'Ambedkar' claims

India Blooms News Service | | 14 Apr 2014, 10:02 pm
Lucknow, Apr 14 (IBNS): Reacting to Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's claim that under BJP rule BR Ambedkar was bestowed with the Bharat Ratna, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Monday said the party was not happy when the architect of the Constitution received the honour.
"The way BJP's prime ministerial candidate is making use of Ambedkar's name in the rallies and spreading false claims...it is highly condemnable. The BJP had not liked it then when Bharat Ratna was awarded to Ambedkar," Mayawati said.

Mayawati also said that it was due to  BSP's pressure that Bharat Ratna was awarded to Ambedkar in 1990 when VP Singh was the prime minister.

This comes after the Gujarat CM at a rally in UP recalled Ambedkar’s contribution in ensuring social harmony and stated how the Congress had only insulted him, even as it failed to address the concerns of the Dalits and the oppressed.

He stated that despite being in power the Congress never honoured Ambedkar, even for years after his death.

Modi said that it was only under the BJP rule that due recognition was given to Ambedkar by bestowing him with the Bharat Ratna.
