Over the last one month, elections were held in the five regions of the country between Mar 27 and Apr 29. While in Assam, the BJP is aiming to retain power, Mamata Banerjee's regional satrap TMC is fighting to return to power for the third consecutive term in West Bengal. In the southern state of Kerala, the Left has locked horns with its arch-rival Congress while the DMK is aiming to oust AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said that the people of Assam have blessed us to retain power in the state.

Elated over the initial trends of Assam poll results, which showed that the BJP has taken a clear cut lead over its rivals, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal exuded confidence that the saffron party-led alliance will retain power in the state.

DMK crosses simple majority with leads in 118 of 234 seats, AIADMK leads in 80 seats

The Opposition DMK gained an edge over the ruling AIADMK and crossed the simple majority mark, having establishing leads in 118 of the 234 Assembly seats as counting of votes continued on Sunday. 

Single phase polling was held on April six for 234 seats to elect the 16th Tamil Nadu Assembly, besides bypoll to the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat.

MK Stalin's DMK and its alliance is all set to form a government in Tamil Nadu.

According to the Election Commission, the MK Stalin-led DMK alliance is leading in over 130 seats, while the AIADMK is leading in 81.

As per the trends, it is clear that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will form the government in Assam, said  CM Sarbananda Sonowal.

As per the latest trends of 98 seats, BJP is leading on 50 seats, its ally Asom Gana Parishad on 11. Congress leading on 19 seats, its ally AIUDF on 9 assembly constituencies.

Amid a massive spike in Covid-19 cases, the counting of votes will take place at 2,364 venues following the COVID-19 protocols, the Election Commission said in a statement. The over-200-per cent increase is to make adherence to the social distancing norms being followed by the poll panel to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
