Kolkata celebrates its birthday

Kolkata, Aug 31 (IBNS) Kolkata, also known as the City of Joy, celebrated her on Aug 24 recently with a function at the Desapriya Park observing the day in a special way.
The Tele Cine Society and Kolkata Today hosted the celebrations where guests were veteran actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay, singer Bonoshree Sengupta, sports personality Chuni Ghoswami, filmmaker Raja Sen, Aniruddha Roy Choudhury, painter Wasim Kapoor, music director Samidh Mukherjee, actress Rituparna Sengupta and others.
 
 The event included cake cutting and a book cover launch based on  Kolkata besides a few write ups by various artists and photography by Dipanjan Ghosh. 
    
 Kolkata's recorded history began in 1690 with the arrival of the English East India Company, which  consolidated its trade business in Bengal. 
 
Job Charnock, an administrator who worked for the Company, is traditionally credited as the founder of the city.
