Time again to say "Happy New Year"

New Delhi/ Mumbai/ Kolkata, Jan 1 (IBNS): As the almanac turned to 2015, it's time to say bygones be bygones and usher in the new year with fresh hopes and aspirations with the world celebrating a 'Happy New Year' on Thursday.

The year 2014 ended amid several celebrations as revellers indulged in merry-making activities such as partying on the beaches of Brazil, the shores of Sydney harbor and the snowy streets of Las Vegas.

While the party animals hit the night joints and streets, the couch potatoes remain glued to the television sets with the channels airing entertainment capsules designed for the New Year.

Meanwhile, a crush at New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai has killed 35 people and injured some 42 others, Chinese state media reported.

The crush took place in Chenyi Square in Shanghai's historic Bund district overlooking the Huangpu river.

In India, the new year is celebrated as any other major festival.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished citizens on this day.

"Wishing you & your family a wonderful 2015! May this year bring immense happiness, peace & prosperity in everyone's lives," he tweeted.

People hit outdoors on this day for picnics and other outings.

Restaurants and eateries on any cities are the most crowded destinations on this day.

Cinema houses are also witnessed with heavy queues of people who wish to start the new year by watching the latest films.

India will also witness a new change in the democratic arena as the Planning Commission will be renamed as 'Neeti Ayog'.

Popular search engine Google also bid farewell to 2014 and ringed in the new year with a beautiful doodle on its homepage.

To mark the new year, pclebrities and public figures took it Twitter to wish netizens and fans a happy new year.


Apart from SMSes, the social networking sites flooded with messages and even the celebrities took the opportunity in greeting their fans on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh wished all and said: “My greetings to you and your family on the occasion of New Year 2015. May this year brings joy, prosperity and success to you.”

UK president David Cameron wished people across the globe by posting a small tweet that read: “Happy New Year!”

The Congress party posted on its official twitter homepage: “We Wish Everyone A Very #HappyNewYear ! Welcome 2015 !”

Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal said: “Happy new year to u and ur family :) May 2015 bring joy and prosperity in ur life.”

Union Telecom and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad: “May this New Year bring you peace, prosperity and happiness in your life. #HappyNewYear 2015.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted: “May this New Year bring you peace, prosperity and happiness in your life. #HappyNewYear 2015.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said: “Wishing everyone a Very Prosperous & Happy #NewYear2015 ! Let us pledge to unite & work together for making our Maharashtra, the Best State!”

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan said: “May the light of the new sunrise, brighten us all for the entire year of 2015 .. harmony and happiness !!”

Actress Sonakshi Sinha tweeted: “Happy new year you guys! Thank you for believing in me, standing by me and for all the love. This 2015 hoping to give u back lots more.”

Bollywood actor Boman Irani  said: “…and looking forward to a Happy new year! Lots of love to one and all!!!!!!!!”

Writer Chetan Bhagat posted: “You can't control sunshine but you can enjoy it and be grateful for it while it lasts. Thank you 2014.”

Badminton icon Saina Nehwal said: “Hello friends wish you a very happy new year.”

Writer Salman Rushdie said :” Happy new year everyone.”
