Influx of asylum seekers a litmus test for Canadian government, PM Trudeau insists readiness

Ottawa/Quebec, Aug 8 (IBNS): The recent influx of a huge number of asylum seekers over the Quebec border is turning out to be a litmus test for the Canadian government, media reports said.

A massive crowd gathered outside Montreal Olympic Stadium to support the asylum seekers on Sunday.

Earlier, the asylum seekers were sheltered in the stadium of Montreal.

The crowd who gathered to showcase their support for the asylum seekers, comprised of few people who earlier sought the same from the Canadian government.

The City of Montreal said around 300 people are crossing the border to seek asylum each day, according to CTV News.

Report also suggested the present situation is much more driven by the Haitians who were illegal occupants in the US and now crossing the border out of fear that they would be compelled to leave the country due to President Donald Trump's policy.

The present situation has already triggered political battles.

The Opposition accused the Canadian government of failing to discharge their duties.

Conservative MP Blake Richards called the situation "chaos".

Urging the would-be migrants to respect the border with the US, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the country is completely ready to process Quebec asylum seekers.

Trudeau was quoted by CBC News as saying:"We want migration to Canada to be done in an orderly fashion; there's border checkpoints and border controls that we need to make sure are respected."

"The people coming now irregularly will still have to go through all the proper processes" the PM added.
