London, Sep 18 (IBNS): Former England football team captain Wayne Rooney has been banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty of drink and drive early this month, media reports said.

Rooney was stopped by the police in Wilmslow, Cheshire, as he was driving a black Volkswagen Beetle at 2 a.m. on September 1.

The former England captain appeared in the court on Monday.

He has been ordered by Stockport Magistrates Court to perform 100 hours of unpaid works as a part of 12-month community order.

The 31-year old footballer has also been asked to pay a fine of £170.

In an official statement, Rooney, said:"Following today’s court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgiveable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong."

"I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career," the footballer said.

Rooney, who has scored the highest number of goals for England, announced his retirement from international duty in 2016.
