34 kgs radioactive uranium recovered from central Assam, 3 held

Guwahati, Sept 25 (IBNS): Tension gripped in central Assam’s Nagaon district after security force recovered about 34 kilograms radioactive uranium from a house at Borkola area on Monday morning.

Security personnel arrested three persons including a woman in connection with it.

According to the reports, based on intelligence input, the troops of army’s Red horn division and Nagaon police jointly launched operation at the area near Bebejia on Sunday evening and recovered about 34 kilograms radioactive elements uranium from a house owned by Mamoni Kaur.

The security personnel arrested Mamoni Kaur and two other persons identified as Apurba Das and Jatin Das in connection with it.

A top police official said that uranium is used in bomb making especially in manufacture of nuclear bomb and the seized elements are worth nearly Rs 15-18 crore.

“The elements were kept buried in a separate room of the house,” the police official said.

Meanwhile, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahai directed the Nagaon police to keep the seized elements with high security.

Investigation is going on and further details are awaited.
