Guwahati, Aug 18 (IBNS): A major tragedy was averted in Assam’s capital city Guwahati after police found a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) packed in a gunny bag from the Silchar bound train’s parcel baggage at Guwahati railway station on Friday morning, officials said.

According to the reports, a home guard on duty at the Railway Mail Service (RMS), behind the platform number one at Guwahati railway station heard a ticking sound from a parcel and immediately contacted with the Government Railway police.

“When we sorting out the parcels, hearing a ticking sound from a parcel, which was came from Meghdoot Bhawan,” the home guard said.

The GRP personnel with bomb squad team had rushed to the area and immediately shifted the parcel to an isolated place.

“The bomb squad team had detected an IED weighing around 8-10 kg inside the parcel and the IED was safely lifted to the safety police van,” Guwahati city police commissioner Hiren Nath said.

The top Assam cop said that, later it was taken away from the Guwahati railway station and the bomb squad team had defused it at Lalmati area near Rani, outskirts of Guwahati.
