Anyone who takes the exam on or after March 26 in 2018 will get the exam based on the new PMBOK Guide – Sixth Edition.

The Importance of PMP Explained

Founded in 1969, the Project Management Institute (PMI) is responsible for the PMP certification which has global acceptability. In fact, the institute is providing value to over 2.9 million professionals working in every country as per information available on the PMI website.

Many organizations today are emphasizing on either recruiting Project Managers who have the PMP certification or are looking to train their existing managers on PMP. The widespread acceptability of this certification makes it one of the most sought-after courses in the world today.

Today, companies across diverse industry verticals require experienced professionals in Project Management as it relates to the application of knowledge, tools, techniques, and skills to initiate, plan, execute, monitor, close projects. A PMP-certified Project Managerinstills the trust in organizations to ensure cost-effective, timely and successful project outcomes.

Overview of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide

The sixth edition of the PMBOK Guide is out! Released in September 2017, this is the most recent version of the guide basis which you can prepare for your PMP examination. Remember: The fifth edition of the PMBOK Guide will still apply if you are taking the exam before March 26, 2018, the date from which the sixth edition comes into effect.

One of the most striking features of the PMBOK Guide is that it is prepared by the community and is for the community which means current PMP-certified Project Managers have been actively involved in developing and reviewing the guide. While the new edition continues to focus on traditional approaches, an inclusion of best practices of Agile have also been incorporated in consultation with The Agile Alliance.

Besides the addition of Agile best practices, let us explore in detail the other important changes in the 2018 PMP examination:

Major Changes in the 2018 PMP Examination

Some of the important changes in the 2018 PMP exam based on the sixth edition of the PMBOK guide are as follows:

• Changes in Lexicon–A lot of the changes that you will see in the 6th edition PMBOK Guide will be related to changes in the terminology used.

• Addition of New Sections– Expect tosee major changes in the Knowledge Areas where four new sections will be added. The new sections are Key Concepts, Trends and Emerging Practices, Consideration for Agile/Adaptive Environments, and Tailoring Considerations.

• Improved Naming to Reflect Course Content –Two of the key Knowledge Areas in Human Resource Management and Time Management have been renamed to Resource Management and Schedule Management respectively.

• A New Chapter on Project Managers- A new chapter finds its way in the new edition of the PMBOK Guide which is around Project Managers. This chapter will cover the skills, competencies, skills, and experience required for Project Managers.

All the above changes in the PMP exam are made with an eye on the evolving needs of today’s organizations. And rightly so! An astounding $122 million was wasted due to poor project performance for every $1 billion invested in the United States, as per PMI. No company would like to incur losses because of project management failures and therefore the demand for Project Managers is only going to increase from here onwards.

With the right amount of guidance and training, you can come good on the expectations of such companies by becoming a Project Manager who has PMP certification and achieve immense success in your career.
