Bengaluru continues to be plagued by allegedly toxic froth from city lake

India Blooms News Service | | 29 May 2017, 01:19 pm
Bengaluru, May 29 (IBNS): Parts of Bengaluru continue to struggle with the chemical and toxic froth from the Varthur lake, according to media reports on Monday.

Heavy rainfall over the weekend resulted in the lake frothing over and spilling across despite the protective wire mesh.

A similar incident was noticed a week earlier too but residents claim the government has not taken any step to mitigate the situation.

The media quoting local people said that strong winds caused the froth to wing its way to nearby buildings, including a hospital and a shopping mall. The overflowing froth even disrupted traffic.

The Karnataka state government has failed to find a remedy to the allegedly carcinogenic froth, whose formation is attributed to the dumping of chemical and toxic wastes in the lakes.

Residents allege that the lakes of Bengaluru are slowly becoming environmental hazards. The formation of the toxic foam has been in the news since 2015, according to media reports.
