Vikrant Massey urges children to cut screen time as he joins World Bicycle Day ride in Delhi

New Delhi: Actor Vikrant Massey on Sunday urged children to spend less time on screens and take up outdoor activities during a World Bicycle Day cycling event in the national capital.

Massey joined Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and thousands of fitness enthusiasts at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for a special edition of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle campaign.

"We should ask our kids to cut down on screen time and actually go and play in the grounds. No matter how much money you earn or how many assets you build, without health, nothing matters," the actor said.

Massey joined Mandaviya, boxer Nupur Sheoran and Kannada actor Ragini Dwivedi at the event, which drew more than 15,000 participants in Delhi.

According to the Sports Ministry, over 4 lakh people took part in cycling drives held across thousands of locations nationwide to mark World Bicycle Day.

Recalling his childhood, Massey said cycling on Sunday morning brought back memories of spending time outdoors with friends.

"After many years, this Sunday morning brought back memories of how we used to go out with our friends during childhood. Many old memories were refreshed," he said.

The actor also praised Mandaviya's efforts in promoting fitness through the cycling campaign, which was launched in December 2024.

"Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has been very committed to this initiative. He cycles daily and participates every Sunday, which is truly inspiring. It has become a movement," Massey said.

Addressing participants, Mandaviya said cycling promotes physical and mental well-being while also helping reduce fuel consumption, pollution and traffic congestion.

The nationwide event saw participation from state sports departments, armed forces personnel, central police forces, educational institutions, volunteers and cycling clubs.

World Cup gold medallist boxer Nupur Sheoran also encouraged people to devote at least 15 to 30 minutes daily to cycling or any other physical activity, saying growing participation reflected increasing awareness about fitness among Indians.

The Fit India Sundays on Cycle programme is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India, Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation and My Bharat. The campaign has reached more than 30 lakh people since its launch, according to the ministry.
