Rs. 665-crore Central package to clean up Bengaluru lakes

Bengaluru, Apr 20 (IBNS) The Centre will provide a Rs 665 crore aid package to Karnataka government to clean Bengaluru lakes, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has said.

Reports said the aid will be used for setting up a 74 km long trunk sewage line and four sewage treatment plants.

"While Rs 500 crore would be spent on setting up a 74 km trunk sewage line to carry the waste, Rs 165 crore would be spent on establishing four sewage treatment plants at Bellandur lake, which was so polluted that it caught fire," he said here on Tuesday.

The minister met officials from Karnataka  to discuss the pollution abatement schemes and is likely to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in May to finalise the roadmap.

Javadekar said out of 587 sewage treatment plants in Bengaluru, 137 are closed and the rest don’t work to their full capacity. “Bengaluru generates 1,280 million litres per day of sewage. The city has a capacity of 721 MLD but in reality only 600 MLD of sewage is being treated.

Bengaluru has seen massive pollution in water bodies like Bellandur and Varthur lakes.
