Powerful tremors shake North India as earthquake hits Afghanistan

A powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Friday night, sending strong tremors across North India and triggering panic among residents.

The sudden jolts forced people to rush out of homes and office buildings as the ground shook unexpectedly.

Impact

Even moderate earthquakes in the Hindu Kush region can impact large parts of northern India due to geological sensitivity.

Friday night’s tremors once again exposed how vulnerable densely populated urban areas are to seismic activity.

Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR and several northern cities, including Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Srinagar, Poonch and Udhampur.

Tremors were also reported in parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad and Peshawar.

What people experienced

Residents, especially in high-rise buildings, reported brief but noticeable shaking.

Many said furniture and household items rattled, while others described a sudden, strong jolt lasting a few seconds.

“I felt a strong jolt,” said a resident in Chandigarh, recalling the moment panic set in.

No immediate damage reported

So far, there are no reports of casualties or major damage.

Authorities are still assessing the situation, and further details about the epicentre and impact are awaited.

Social media buzz

People quickly took to social media to share their experiences.

Several users described the tremors as unusually strong, with some saying it was the most intense shaking they had felt in years.

What’s next

Officials are monitoring aftershocks and gathering more data on the quake.

Experts typically advise staying alert in the hours following such tremors, as aftershocks can occur.
