Over 5.48 lakh people hit by Assam flood, two more die as death toll touches 15
Guwahati, June 18 (IBNS): The current wave flood situation in Assam still looks grim as flood waters inundated few more areas with affecting over 5.48 lakh people of six districts and claiming two more lives as death toll mounted in flood and landslides to 15.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two people drowned on Monday in flood hit Cachar and Hailakandi districts.
The flood waters submerged more areas in Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, Nagaon, Hojai and Golaghat districts.
Over 5.48 lakh people of 719 villages have been affected in the current wave flood.
Over 2.34 lakh people have been affected alone in Karimganj district while 2.10 lakh people in Hailakandi, 93,257 people in Cachar districts and the flood situation in Barak valley more worsened.
According to the ASDMA, over 1.59 lakh people have taken shelter at 225 relief camps set up by the district administration.
The administration also set up 212 relief distribution centres in the flood hit districts.
Following torrential rains for few parts of the state, the water levels of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have been increasing and crossing danger level mark in many places.
The NDRF and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations and the teams on Monday rescued 8201 people from the three districts of Barak valley.
