Nuclear reactor in Gujarat shut down after leakage
New Delhi, Mar 11 (IBNS) A unit of the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat has been shut down on Friday owing to hard water leakage and an emergency has been declared inside the plant though no nuclear radiation as been recorded, according to media reports.
The leakage was reported in the primary heat transport system.
The plant has two pressurised heavy water reactors, which began commercial operation in May 1993 and September 1995.
The workers inside the plant were initially isolated. But they were allowed to leave once they were accounted for and it was reported that there was no radiation issue.
According to plant officials, there was no radiation leakage outside the plant.
The nuclear is now in the cooling down phase.
Japan is observing five years of the massive earthquake that took place on March 11, 2011 that resulted in a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people.
The gigantic sea waves breached the walls of the Fukushima nuclear power station on Mar 12 and led to a meltdown in three of its reactors with disastrous consequences.
