Tirupati, Feb 27 (UNI) Heavy downpour lashed Tirupati city and its surrounding mandals on Wednesday evening, resulting in disruption of normal life for more than an hour.

The rain, which lasted for more than half an hour accompanied by gusty winds, caused halting of vehicular traffic.

At some low-lying areas, the rain water flew knee deep, while it went up to three metres and entered houses in areas like Subhash Nagar, Erramitta, Akkaram Palli and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Choultries.

At TTD choultries, even after rain receded, the pilgrims were forced to wade in the stagnated water in front of the spots, where taxis and other vehicles were stranded. Due to gusty winds, name boards of several shops, offices and banners of advertisements were blown off.

The electricity department officials cut the power supply for more than half an hour as a precautionary measure. Trees at some areas were uprooted and some of the branches fell down, owing to heavy winds.

In Tirumala also, the pilgrims witnessed heavy downpour and faced adverse climatic situation, leading to more inconvenience.

In the surrounding areas of Tirupati, heavy downpour lasted for more than half an hour. The buses covering rural areas were stopped on the spot.

Power supply in the city and surrounding areas was resumed, after rains.
