Cyclonic 'Biparjoy' begins landfall at Gujarat coast with strong winds and heavy rains

New Delhi/IBNS: The landfall process of the very severe Cyclonic 'Biparjoy' over Northeast Arabian Sea began this evening bringing heavy rain on the Gujarat coast. The entire process is expected to take around six hours.

The Cyclonic storm moved east-northeast wards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centered about 70 west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat), 130 km west-northwest of Devbhumi Dwarka, 100 km west-southwest of Naliya and 240 km south-southeast of Karachi (Pakistan).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin said the landfall process has commenced by midnight and it will be completely over the land.

The wind speed during the time of landfall is 115-125 kmph gusting to 140 kmph.

The landfall area was at Saurashtra, Kutch and adjoining Pakistan Coasts.

The storm surge of about 2-3 meters above the Astronomical Tide is likely to innundate the low-lying areas of Kachchh, Devbhumi Dwaraka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Morbi districts during the landfall.

Astronomical Tides along these districts could be up to 3-6 meters in different places, the bulletin added.

Biparjoy has been classified as a category 3 "very severe cyclonic storm".

Nearly one lakh people have been evacuated and moved to shelters ahead of the cyclone's landfall. These include people from nearly 20 villages living within 10 km of the coast.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel chaired a meeting in Gandhinagar earlier in the day to review preparations for the approaching cyclone.

Eighteen teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 12 of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 115 teams of the state road and building department, and 397 of the state electricity department have been deployed in coastal districts.
