Child birth outside govt hospital: NHRC sends notice to Delhi govt

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IBNS): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday said it has sent notice to the Delhi government over the issue of a woman giving birth to a child outside the hospital under the open sky last month.
"The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance a media report that on account of negligence of doctors' at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in Delhi, a woman gave birth to a child outside the hospital under the open sky in the night of the 27th July, 2014," the Commission said in a statement on Friday.

Reportedly, the woman, who was in advance stage of labour, had come to the hospital for treatment, but the doctors, instead of admitting her, asked her to get an ultrasound performed from outside.

But, in the process, she delivered the baby outside the hospital.

The NHRC said: "The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to health of the victim woman and her newborn. It has issued a notice to the Secretary, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of NCT of Delhi calling for a factual report within two weeks."
