Breaking 115 years' record, Kolkata observes hottest Jan 10
According to Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre's reports, on Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures of Kolkata were 29.5 and 17.7 degree Celsius respectively, which were 3 and 4 degree higher respectively than the normal.
The combined impact of smog and the absence of northwesterly winds are responsible for such change in weather, weather scientists said.
Deputy Director General of Indian Meteorological Department-IMD (Eastern zone), Gokul Chandra Debnath told IBNS, "The chill factor in the Eastern part of the country mainly depends on the weather condition of the northern region. Strong western disturbances, which are responsible for the snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, bring chillness in this region. This year, the western disturbances are not strong enough. That is the main reason for such abnormal temperature in this time."
"This is the hottest 10th January in past 115 years. Such hottest January here was last reported in 1909. Until a strong western disturbance comes, temperature in Kolkata will not be normal," he further said.
