Assam flood situation worsens
According to media reports on Wednesday, the flood situation in this North-Eastern state continued to be grim which left at least 10 dead since Aug 18.
Over 12 lakh people have been affected in floods in 16 districts.
Assam's primary river Bramhaputra and its tributaries all continued to flow above danger level.
Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level in Jorhat, Guwahati, Tezpur, Goalpara and Dhubri areas.
According to statistics provided by State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), about 2,100 villages have been inundated which forced 1.65 lakh people to take shelter in 200-odd relief camps.
The flood waters have also damaged crops in more than 1 lakh hectares of land.
But, the situtation is expected to worsen further with more rainfall coming in the way. The Met dept. has given a forecast of heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. State officials are kept in high alert.
Over 100 boats of the NDRF, SDRF and the Inland Water Transport department were engaged in relief and rescue operations.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressed into service.
Chief Minister Taun Gogoi is taking stock of the flood situation. He made an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas on Wednesday.
Gogoi visited Majuli before arriving in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. Media reports said Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal is also expected to visit the state soon.
