Assam flood situation worsens, 27 lakh people affected; toll rises to 91

Guwahati/IBNS: The flood situation in Assam again worsened on Thursday as the water levels of all major rivers are increasing following incessant rains in the state and other neighbouring states in past few days.

The water level of Brahmaputra river is now flowing above the danger level mark in Guwahati, at Dibrugarh, Nimatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Goalpara and Dhubri district.

On the other hand, the water level of Dhansiri river is also flowing above danger level at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur district, Kopili at Kampur, Dharamtul in Nagaon district, Beki at Road Bridge crossing in Barpeta district, Gaurang at Kokrajhar, Kushiyara river at Karimganj and Sankosh river at Golakganj in Dhubri district.

New areas have been inundated by flood waters in the state in the last 24 hours.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management (ASDMA) authority, nearly 27 lakh people of 25 districts are affected in the deluge.

1.46 lakh hectares of crop lands of 2548 villages of the flood hit districts are currently under water.

The current spate of flood claimed two more lives on Thursday taking the state death toll to 91.

One each person drowned in flood waters in Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar districts.

On the other hand, 123 wild animals including 12 rhinos have died due to flood in Kaziranga National Park.

92 percent areas and 152 anti-poaching camps out of 223 camps of the park are currently under water.
