Assam flood: Brahmaputra water level receding towards upstream but overall grim situation

Guwahati, July 17 (IBNS): The water level of the Brahmaputra river is receding in some parts of the state, but the overall flood situation in Assam is still grim with over 52.59 lakh people have been affected.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 52.59 lakh people of 32 districts in the state have been affected in the current flood and 20 people have lost their lives due to flood and landslide.

Five persons had drowned in the flood waters on Tuesday in Barpeta, Dhubri, Morigaon and Nagaon districts.

The flood waters have submerged 4663 villages and 1,63.969 hectare of crop lands.

Over 12.15 lakh people have been affected alone in Barpeta district, while 10.79 lakh people affected in Dhubri district, 5.96 lakh people in Morigaon, 4.40 lakh people in South Salmara, 2.14 lakh people in Darrang, 2.09 lakh people in Nalbari, 2.01 lakh people in Bongaigaon, 1.92 lakh people in Goalpara, 1.35 lakh people in Kamrup, 1.30 lakh people in Golaghat districts.

The administration has set up 290 relief camps and 405 Relief Distribution Centres in the flood-hit districts and 1,47304 flood affected people have taken shelter in the relief camps.

NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operations.

NDRF team with rescue boats (459 + personnel with boats) have been placed in 16 locations and SDRF has been deployed in 40 locations (338 personnel with rescue boats) of the state.

The centre has released Rs 251.55 crore as the first instalment of SDRF to Assam.
