Tokyo, June 30 (IBNS): An attempt made by a Japanese entrepreneur to send first privately backed rocket into space crashed as it exploded shortly after liftoff on Saturday, media reports said.

Interstellar Technologies, founded by popular internet service provider Livedoor's creator Takafumi Horie, made the attempt as he launched the unmanned rocket, MOMO-2, at around 5:30 am from Taiki test site in Japan.

However, the rocket crashed back down to the launch pad and exploded.

"The unmanned 1-ton rocket, which was 10 meters long and 50 cm in diameter, marked the second failure in a row for Interstellar Technologies," reported Kyodo.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The company tweeted: "We have confirmed that there is no human damage to IBA personnel. We are currently in emergency response. We will continue to inform you as soon as the information comes in."
