Hyderabad/IBNS: A day after the Serum Institute of India (SII) rolled out its vaccine against Covid-19, the first batch of India's indigenous remedy Covaxin, made by Bharat Biotech, left Hyderabad for 11 cities on Wednesday morning, media reports said.

The first consignment was flown to the national capital Delhi via the country's airline Air India.

Apart from Delhi, the vaccines will reach Bengaluru, Chennai, Patna, Jaipur and Lucknow.

Both Covaxin and Covishield, the Oxford University's vaccine made by the SII in India, have been granted permission for an emergency use in the country, which was battered by the deadly virus but now placed in a far better situation.

Bharat Biotech, which had partnered with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will give 16.5 lakh doses of Covaxin to the central government free of cost.

The first phase of the nationwide inoculation drive, where the health workers will prioritised, will begin on Jan 16.
