J&K records highest single-day spike of 620 cases, tally surpasses 4000-mark

Srinagar/UNI: Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest single-day jump with 620 persons, including 583 from Kashmir and 37 from Jammu, testing positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, taking the total number of infected people in the Union Territory (UT) to 4087.

Of the 620 new positive cases, only 32, including 12 from Jammu, are those, who have recently returned from outside J&K.

Meanwhile, a non-local tailor, a resident of Kolkata, was tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, hours after he died in a local hospital in Srinagar, taking the death toll due to the infection in J&K to 41.

An official on Sunday said that 583 more people tested positive for Coronavirus in Kashmir division, while 37 new cases were reported from Jammu. “Kulgam recorded the highest number of 161 new COVID-19 cases, followed by Baramulla with 132 cases,” he said, adding that 87 people tested positive for the infection in Srinagar.

“Pulwama registered 60 new COVID-19 cases,” he said, adding that 59 people tested positive for the infection in Anantnag.

He said Shopian recorded 24 new cases, while 21 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Bandipora and 22 in Jammu. “Ganderbal witnessed 14 cases,” he said, adding seven person tested positive from Kupwara.

He said Ramban, Reasi and Kishtwar were the only three districts in J&K which recorded zero new cases.

With 620 new cases, he said the total number of infected persons in J&K has risen to 4087. “Out of these, 3198 are in Kashmir and 889 are in Jammu,” he said.
The total active positive cases in the UT stood at 2830, including 2146 from Kashmir and 684 from Jammu.

He said 90 COVID-19 patients from J&K were discharged on Sunday, after being treated successfully. “As many as 1216 positive patients have been treated and discharged successfully so far,” he said.

Ten districts of Jammu have reported five fatalities while 36 people have lost their lived due to COVID-19 in ten districts of Kashmir.

With the non-local’s death, the death toll due to the infection has risen to 11 in Srinagar, which is the worst affected district in J&K in terms of causality due to the disease. Baramulla stands at number two with seven fatalities, followed by Anantnag with five deaths. Kulgam and Shopian are at number four with four fatalities each.
