Kolkata/IBNS: A 59-year-old man from Sheoraphuli area in Kolkata's neighbouring Hooghly district of West Bengal tested positive for novel coronavirus, taking the total number of Covid-19 infected cases in the state to 21, officials said on Sunday.

According to reports, the man with no recent travel history to any foreign country is undergoing treatment in a very critical condition under ventilator support in a private hospital in Kolkata's Salt Lake area.

State health officials said that they were trying to track how the man was infected with novel coronavirus.

"We are trying to understand the source of his Covid-19 infection as we have come to know that he went to Durgapur weeks ago," a health official said.

Earlier in the evening, two more persons, including a colonel-rank anesthesiologist of Kolkata's Army Command Hospital and a 66-year-old man from Baranagar in North 24 Parganas district, were found Covid-19 positive.

On Saturday, two women from East Medinipur's Egra and another 44-year-old lady from Kalimpong, who is undergoing treatment at North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri, tested positive for Covid-19.

Presently, West Bengal is treating 20 novel coronavirus positive patients at different hospitals while the state had reported first and so far only Covid-19 death in Kolkata on Mar 23.

West Bengal health officials said that 44,837 persons are under home surveillance in the state while 171 persons with Covid-19 symptoms have been kept in the isolation wards of several state hospitals.
