Womb Transplant: Indian doctors successfully conduct surgery in Pune

Pune, May 19 (IBNS): A 21-year-old woman from Solapur who was born without a uterus was successfully operated upon by a set of 12 surgeons in a Pune hospital, thereby marking India's first womb transplant case, reports said.

The surgery was performed for over 12 hours at the Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute in Pune.

It took the surgeons three years of preparation and an ample amount of paperwork to finally achieve the landmark.

The donor was the patient's mother and the uterus was removed via a laparoscopic surgery.

However, the doctors said that the recipient will be monitored for the next six months to ensure that things are functioning normally and that the organ is not rejected by her body.

The doctors also said they expect the recipient to menstruate normally, something which she has not experienced thus far.

She will also undergo an IVF procedure a year later which will enable her to have a baby.

Following the success, the hospital is expected to take up their second case on Friday, where a 23-year old woman from Gujarat will go under the knife.

The first womb transplant was performed in Sweden in 2012.

The recipient gave birth to a premature baby a couple of years later, a BBC report read.

According to reports, around 25 womb transplant have been done so far, with success in 10 cases.

The team of doctors involved in the Pune womb transplant travelled to Sweden and practiced on corpses in the US and Germany.

Before going ahead in our hospital, we followed a rigorous process while choosing the donor and the recipient of womb," Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, medical director, GCLI, told Hindustan Times.

With the success, more clinics are expected to try their hand at womb transplant.
