High alert in Telengana after polio strain is found in Hyderabad

India Blooms News Service | | 15 Jun 2016, 01:45 pm
Hyderabad, June 15 (IBNS) A high alert against polio has been declared in Telangana after an active strain of the virus was detected in drain water in the state capital Hyderabad.

Media reports quoted government officials as saying a massive vaccination programme is going to be launched as a preventive measure.

About two lakh vaccines are being airlifted from Geneva to innoculate more than three lakh children in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district.

Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) strain has not been seen in the country for more than five years with no polio case being reported so far.

The virus strain was detected during random tests of sewage that have been carried out regularly since India was formally declared polio-free in 2014.
