Air pollution soars high in Delhi after cracker ban defied on Diwali

New Delhi/IBNS: A day after people across the country celebrated Diwali, pollution levels in Delhi and nearby areas soared high with revellers defying the ban on firecrackers.

The air quality in the national capital plunged to "severe category", which worsened the pollution caused by burning farm waste in neighbouring states.

The average AQI in Delhi at 8 AM stood at 468.

Experts believe that short term exposures to high levels of PM 2.5 can cause severe health problems and can also result in the massive spike in coronavirus infections.

Almost all the areas in the city logged PM2.5 levels above 400 with many regions nearing the alarming 500-mark.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) for PM 2.5 pollutant stood crossed 800 in most parts of the capital on the night of Diwali.

The National Green Tribunal had imposed a total ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers in Delhi and adjoining areas from Nov 9 midnight to Nov 30.

The ban came at a time when Delhi is already witnessing a massive spike in Coronavirus cases and the rise in air pollution.
