Assam flood: Water submerges more villages, death toll now 71

Guwahati, July 23 (IBNS): Floodwaters have submerged more villages in Assam following heavy rain over the past 34 hours.

With two more deaths, the death toll in Assam flood has risen to 71. Over 28 lakh people of 19 districts are affected.  

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons died due to flood in the state in past 24 hours and the death toll mounted to 71.

The latest two deaths have occurred in Morigaon and Golaghat districts.

The flood waters have submerged hundreds of new villages in the state. As many as 317 new villages in Kokrajhar district have been inundated.

Apart from the Kokrajhar district, the flood waters have submerged several new villages in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Bongaigaon and Kamrup districts.

The water level of the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are again flowing above danger level mark in various places in the state.

A total of 2523 villages and 1,26,837 hectare of crop lands are still under water.
