World Environment Day: Saina, Alia Bhatt lead '#BeatPlasticPollution' campaign in India

New Delhi, June 5 (IBNS): As the globe is observing World Environment Day on Tuesday, several Indian celebrities joined hands in campaigning against single-use plastic.

The campaign has been named as '#BeatPlasticPollution'.

Urging his Bollywood colleagues like Varun Dhawan to leave using plastic, Alia Bhatt tweeted: " I would like to tag my fellow environment friendly friends @Varun_dvn @arjunk26 @sonamakapoor to take up this challenge and and show us how you've taken a step away from plastic and towards a more sustainable future.. #BeatPlasticPollution."

Speaking on the menace of using plastic, in her earlier tweet, she said: "#BeatPlasticPollution by switching to steel or glass bottles today! Plastic bottles take 450 years or more to decompose, harming us and our environment. I’m now one step closer towards purging plastic from my life. Hope you guys will make the switch too!#LetsCoexist @deespeak."

Actress Juhi Chawla remarked: " I hereby challenge, @SrBachchan @AnupamPKher @sachin_rt @KKRiders @sonamakapoor @RajkummarRao @mrsfunnybones @jiteshpillaai @realpreityzinta @Varun_dvn @TheShilpaShetty @AnilKapoor @priyankachopra I hope you complete the challenge & tag others too #BeatPlasticPollution."

Badminton star Saina Nehwal posted: "The movement to beat plastic pollution is growing and I urge you to http://join.You  can#BeatPlasticPollution by sharing a video or photo on this #WorldEnvironmentDay .I would like to challenge my friends to spread this initiative @parupallik @PRANNOYHSPRI @GuruSaiDutt1 ."

Actor Arjun Kapoor said :"It takes one small step to #BeatPlasticPollution! I’ve replaced using plastic bottles with a metal one. It’s convinient & environment friendly. Tagging @AnushkaSharma @RanveerOfficial & @ParineetiChopra to take up the challenge & inspire others to choose a sustainable future."

Actress Dia Mirza also joined them in being a part of the campaign as she posted: " Tag, I’m it – thanks for tagging me @adriangrenier! I switched to biodegradable sanitary napkins when I realised they are made mostly of plastic!#BeatPlasticPollution with @UNEnvironment for #WorldEnvironmentDay! Hey @sahil_sangha @aliaa08 @JNJCares – Tag, you’re it!."

Earlier, it was the United Nations which had also invited people to join the global game of tagging people to beat the use of plastic.

"Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay We must all do our part to #BeatPlasticPollution and protect this and all other wonderful ecosystems on planet earth. Tag, you're all it! Do your part to clean up our environment and be the change for a happier healthier planet!," UN Environment tweeted.
