Uphaar: Supreme Court to reconsider Ansal brothers' jail verdict
In 1997, nearly 59 people died and about 103 injured in a fire in the Uphaar cinema hall. The builders had flouted basic safety laws, including blocking exit doors to accommodate more seats than allowed.
In 2015, the court fined the brothers Rs. 30 crores each, finding them guilty of charges that included criminal negligence, but ruled they would not be jailed, partly because of their age.
The verdict led to outrage, especially among the families who lost their kin in the fire.
The CBI, which investigated the case, as well as a group of those who lost their relatives in the fire, challenged the verdict.
Ansals owned the theatre.
