Jewellers' strike in WB expected to end on Monday

| | Apr 11, 2016, at 03:17 pm
Kolkata, Apr 11 (IBNS) West Bengal is expected to see an end to the jewellers' strike, which began country-wide on Mar 2 and has been most felt in Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi, on Monday, according to media reports.

Jewellers and bullion traders were protesting over the one per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Union Budget for 2016-17 on February 29.

They are also not happy that quoting of PAN by customers for transactions of Rs 2 lakh and above is being made mandatory.

According to reports, although the Union government is not withdrawing the tax, the realisation process is likely to be simplified

Jewellers in West Bengal do a brisk trade on the Bengali New Year's Day (Poila Baisakh) and Akshay Trititya. With the upcoming wedding season, continuing the strike would have meant facing a big loss in business, which has already been affected by the 40-day strike, according to most jewellers in Kolkata.
