Fuel shock! Premium petrol price hiked ₹2 amid global crude oil surge

| @indiablooms | Mar 20, 2026, at 04:14 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: The price of premium petrol has been increased by ₹2 per litre amid volatility in global crude oil markets triggered by the ongoing West Asia conflict, media reports said.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) implemented the hike with effect from Friday, while prices of regular petrol remain unchanged.

Assuring consumers of adequate supply, HPCL said in a post on X, “There is no disruption in crude oil supply. Additional cargoes are already on the way and will further strengthen India’s supply position in the coming days. Avoid rumours. Trust official updates.”

As crude oil prices surged past $110 per barrel, several countries, including European nations and Japan, have moved to secure safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil transit route that has been restricted for some countries by Iran.

The United States has also stepped up efforts to ensure there is no disruption in global oil supply.

India views the Strait of Hormuz as a vital economic chokepoint and is working to ensure uninterrupted oil flow while maintaining a stance of strategic neutrality.

The Strait has not been closed to India, but access remains restricted amid ongoing tensions. Indian vessels are being allowed passage selectively, often through diplomatic coordination with Iran.

While operational, the route remains high-risk, with delays and disruptions continuing due to the conflict.
