Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 company and a Maharatna PSU, has completed a comprehensive modernisation of its Vadinar–Bina Pipeline to strengthen national energy security and ensure uninterrupted crude oil transportation amid rising domestic energy demand and evolving cybersecurity challenges.

The 937 km cross-country pipeline is a critical national asset supplying crude oil to BPCL’s Bina Refinery.

The modernisation programme focused on upgrading automation, monitoring, and cyber security systems across the pipeline network. With a capacity of 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum, the Vadinar–Bina Pipeline plays a key role in maintaining stable refinery operations amid rising domestic energy demand.

The scope of work included replacement of Remote Terminal Units across pumping stations, pigging stations, and sectionalising valve stations, installation of new SCADA servers at Vadinar and Bina, and deployment of advanced cyber security measures. These upgrades have strengthened network protection, system resilience, and centralised monitoring across the pipeline infrastructure.

The project was executed without any operational shutdowns, ensuring continuous pipeline operations throughout the transition. The upgraded architecture now includes enhanced failover capability and disaster recovery infrastructure at both ends of the pipeline, supporting operational continuity during adverse conditions.

Commenting on the VBPL SCADA revamp project, BPCL’s Executive Director (Pipelines), Mr. Biju Gopinath, said, “ABB India Ltd has successfully completed a complex SCADA revamp for 937 km Vadinar–Bina crude Pipeline while maintaining continuous pipeline operations, with no operational shutdowns undertaken during the transition. The project addressed cyber security and system resilience requirements, strengthening the reliability of the overall VBPL SCADA infrastructure. The implementation of failover capability by providing SCADA servers at both Vadinar and Bina has enhanced confidence in maintaining operations continuity even under challenging conditions. Throughout the project, the ABB India Ltd team demonstrated consistent professionalism and solid technical expertise.”

The Vadinar–Bina Pipeline forms a core component of BPCL’s pipeline network and reflects the company’s focus on safe, secure, and technology driven infrastructure. The modernisation aligns with BPCL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen operational excellence and reinforce India’s long-term energy security through targeted investments in critical assets.
